Therapy For The Victims of Extreme Human Dysfunction and Human Evil
Evil is beyond emotional, psychological and spiritual dysfunction

By Dr. Rodney Karr

History and Experience

Dr. Karr has over twenty-eight years of clinical experience dealing with clients who have been severely abused, emotionally, physically and sexually. He is currently doing research to differentiate between dysfunction and Evil and has been developing therapeutic processes for the survivors and victims of Evil people and families.

M. Scott Peck, M.D., well known author of the Road Less Traveled also wrote People of The Lie, The Hope for Healing Human Evil in 1983. This book which is one of the few which deals with the subject of psychological and human evil greatly impacted Dr. Karr. Dr. Karr has also been motivated by his personal family and childhood experience of Evil. Evil has taken the form of a number of suicides and of destructive lying in Dr. Karr’s extended family. He has had over twenty-two years of personal Jungian analysis and twenty years of study with spiritual teachers in order to heal his own experience with and victimization by Evil. Adult survivors of evil have been attracted to therapy with Dr. Karr due to his extensive clinical experience, sensitivity and empathy to their pain and suffering. He believes in relationship oriented, disclosive approach to therapy in which he shares his own path of healing from evil.

A Definition of Human Evil

Scott Peck, M. D. in his book, People of The Lie, attempts to come to a definition of human Evil as different from spiritual Evil. He emphasizes that human Evil is very common and is going on all around us with neighbors, relatives, friends, lovers and even oneself which Dr. Karr agrees with. Human Evil is every day and not just the Hitler’s and Sudaam Hussein’s of the world. Scott Peck, M.D. defines Evil people as:

“Those who are devoted to being destructive rather than constructive…Evil is in opposition to life. It is that which opposes the life force. It has to do with, in short,

killing. Specifically, it has to do with murder—namely, unnecessary killing, killing that is not required for biological survival…When I say that evil has to do with killing, I do not mean to restrict myself to corporeal murder. Evil is also that which kills spirit. There are various essential attributes of life—particularly human life—such as sentience, mobility, awareness, growth, autonomy, will. It is possible to kill or attempt to kill one of these attributes without actually destroying the body. Thus we may ‘break’ a horse or even a child without harming a hair on his head. Erich Fromm was actually sensitive to this fact when he broadened the definition of necrophilia to include the desire of certain people to control others—to make them controllable, to foster their dependency, to discourage their capacity to think for themselves, to diminish their unpredictability and originality, to keep them in line.” (Peck 42-43)

Dr. Karr’s Therapeutic Approach To Evil

It is Dr. Karr’s clinical experience, like Dr. Peck’s, that very few truly Evil people seek psychotherapy or remain in it for very long. A characteristic of Evil people is narcissistic/inflated personalities, a denial of personal responsibility and the desire to control and harm others. Such people rapidly realize that the therapeutic process is antithetical to their nature and goals. Sometimes Evil people enter therapy in an attempt to learn better how to control and manipulate others. Dr. Karr’s primary experience of Evil people in therapy has been in couples or family therapy where the Evil person has entered the therapeutic relationship of a partner or child and is attempting to align the therapist with controlling the identified patient for their own ends, to manipulate the therapist or sabotage the therapy.

Dr. Karr’s clinical experience, like Dr. Peck’s, is that the victims of Evil do seek therapy and are found in therapy. Some of these patients are also struggling with conditioned patterns of Evil within themselves such as lying, manipulating others and harming others. They may also be lying to themselves, sabotaging themselves and being engaged in self-destructive and even suicidal behaviors such as drug addiction and relationships with Evil people.

Assessment

Dr. Karr has over twenty-eight years of clinical experience working with the victims of Evil people, which include survivors of emotional, physical and sexual abuse, survivors of incest and rape, clients whose families have histories of perpetrators of murder, victims of murder, suicide, drug addiction, torture, massive lying, etc.

Dr. Karr has developed methods of assessment to differentiate between Evil and dysfunction. Given Dr. Karr’s extensive clinical experience with the victims of Evil, he is able to intuitively and otherwise identify the victims of Evil versus dysfunction. Some of the initial assessment criteria for the identification of victims of Evil are the following:

  • Low self esteem and a victim identity.
  • Taking blame
  • A history of intense emotional, physical or sexual abuse.
  • Lying to self and others (Making everything nice)
  • Having Evil, abusive people in one’s life currently.
  • Fear of being alone/the needs to surround oneself with people and activity.
  • Obsessive/Compulsive disorder
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
  • Idealization and perfectionism
  • Addictive patterns to sex, love, alcohol, drugs, food, etc.
  • Self-destructive patterns such as eating disorders, self hatred, self abuse, self mutilation.

Therapeutic Approaches

Once the patient has been identified by Dr. Karr as a possible victim of Evil, it is important to help the client to shift their perception of their victimization and to look at it as possibly Evil. This word “Evil” is very powerful, frightening and eventually healing to work with for the patient. It is characteristic of the victims of Evil that they have been programmed and hypnotized by their victimizer to take all the blame and accept the excuses and rationale of their abuser(s) they, therefore often begin therapy with glowing and positive statements about their abuser(s) including that they are loving, kind, good, right, righteous, etc.

The beginning of the therapeutic process for the patient involves stepping outside of the denial and deception of their hypnosis and being able to see that they were abused and hurt. A good deal of anger comes up toward the abuser(s) as the victim faces the truth. The truth is an essential part of the healing process. The patient must struggle with questioning what is the truth of the past, what is the daily truth of people around oneself, how to tell when others are lying to oneself and how to confront self deception and patterns of lying to others. Part of the therapeutic process is to identify Post Traumatic Stress symptoms and work with teaching the patient meditative and relaxation procedures to reduce their anxiety level. Mild trance work and guided journeys are used to help the patient to regress, remember and re-experience the childhood trauma.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is used to reframe the past and identify the current manifestations and behaviors which are the result of the victimization. This may include identifying and dealing with current abusive relationships which may be the result of the victim conditioning. These relationships may include work relationships, romantic and sexual relationships, friendships and family relationships. Patients may need to identify their own patterns of finding abusive relationships, maintaining abusive relationships and even creating abusive relationships in their mind or otherwise. Often patients choose as they heal to end some of these relationships if they prove to be unredeemable.

Encouraging clients to improve self esteem, learn self love, increase creativity, passion and success in their life are all important parts of the therapeutic process. Creativity and passion are antidotes to Evil.

A majority of the victims of Evil are co-dependant or dependant upon others for identity and self esteem. Therefore healing must include weaning oneself of dependencies and developing self confident, independent and proactive thought and behavior patterns.

A spiritual, though not necessarily religious, approach to healing similar to twelve step programs such as A.A. and N.A. can be helpful in freeing oneself from Evil. Thinking for oneself is, spiritually speaking, very important for victims of Evil because they are particularly susceptible to the Evil of fanatical, cultish religious organizations. Some defining characteristics of Evil people and organizations is the need to be right, controlling others and their members and being dogmatic. Frequently the victims of Evil have been brought up in dogmatic, religious communities. Therefore, the victims of Evil must also deal with looking at the fact that they may have been or are the victims of religious abuse.

Victims of Evil require long term psychotherapy as well as other healing modalities such as body work, spiritual work, life coaching, creative and play therapies; community work, etc. It is important for the victim of Evil to become exposed intimately to healthy people and communities outside of their own family or circle of influence in order to fully realize how abnormal, destructive and Evil the people around them have been. Most victims of Evil have not realized until much later in their lives that most people don’t have families like they do. Dr. Karr is director of the Monarch Bear Institute which is composed of holistic healers from a variety of professions and disciplines. He sometimes works with a team approach with these colleagues. He may also refer people as necessary to other healers. (See www.monarchbear.org for more information)

Due to the intense nature of therapy with victims of Evil, Dr. Karr prefers to see patients for two hour sessions once per week.

Psychic/Emotional Vampires

Dr. Karr, like other Jungian psychotherapists and theorists such as Joseph Campbell, believes strongly in the power of ancient mythology. According to Joseph Campbell in such books as, “The Masks of God” myths carry the perennial wisdom of our ancestors. Our human ancestors have been dealing with and confronting human evil since the beginning of time. Human myths from various cultures have built into them understandings, perceptions and ways of dealing with evil and evil people.

Dr. Karr has been studying the vampire myths which occur in almost all cultures worldwide. The vampire mythology offers a model of understanding human evil and the relationship between evil people and their victims. It is Dr. Karr’s experience that most; if not all evil people are psychic/emotional vampires. Psychic/emotional vampires are people who are un-whole, who feel incomplete, and who feel an enormous lack or deficit within themselves; people who are very needy and dependant, who do not feel capable of taking care of themselves and surviving by themselves, people who feel a lack of connection to nature, other people, life, creativity, beauty, abundance. These people feel that they must get their support, life force and abundance from others. This is where they become psychic/emotional vampires who, out of desperation to live and a feeling that they are unable to live by their own means are willing to do almost anything to take the life and energy from other people and nature in order to survive.

Psychic/emotional vampires as parents have children in order to create defenseless victims who they can own, control and mold to meet their own survival needs. They literally are willing to drink their children’s emotional blood and spirit and drain them of their life force. This spiritual process manifests itself behaviorally in terms of parents who do not allow their children to individuate or create any healthy boundaries. Such children are raised to meet the needs of their parents. These needs can include sexual needs, emotional needs, companionship needs, control needs, and economic needs. Such parents feel that they have created their children almost as objects and that their children owe them what they want of them. The parent feels a sense of entitlement to use the child in ways that wouldn’t be acceptable to others.

Psychic/emotional vampires as adults become involved in very codependent and symbiotic friendships and relationships. They feel very uncomfortable being alone. Often if a relationship ends they immediately create a new one. They feel uncomfortable with quiet, silence and peace. If someone else isn’t around they normally have the TV, radio or music on or must communicate with someone on a cell phone. Such people would feel very uncomfortable practicing meditation or being in nature. Such people frequently play the victim, are constantly telling other people about their pains and hurts, emotional or physical, and are constantly seeking sympathy and attention.

Frequently such people do not engage in real communication. They have a tendency to talk at people, interrupt others, not listen and keep all the attention on themselves in painful monologues. Successful psychic/emotional vampires develop sophisticated skills of manipulation or control. They may emulate having empathy and emotions in order to manipulate others including tears, anger, and false empathy. However this is all self serving.

Scott Peck in his book People of the Lie points out that one of the core characteristics of evil people is being totally self centered and lacking real caring and empathy for others. However successful psychic/emotional vampires act as if they are empathetic and caring. In fact, it has been Dr. Karr’s experience of the most evil people he has encountered that for a long time early in the relationship with them they were so kind, loving, and so wonderful that it was a huge shock later when they used their knives, claws and teeth to emotionally rip him to shreds. Many spiritual traditions recognize that when the dark one appears he/she is most beautiful, most wonderful and most engaging. The truth only comes out later.

A self-centered/narcissistic person is one who is stuck at an early stage of child development in which everything is perceived as being about the self and for the self. All others are perceived as extensions of oneself, ones needs and wants. This makes such a person extremely dependant upon others and also results in extreme efforts to control and manipulate other people to conform to ones own needs and perceptions. Such a person is constantly being disappointed in others and the outer world for not conforming to their needs and desires. Ultimately this results in a good deal of anxiety, fear and depression. Such a person frequently seeks other deeply wounded people animals or children to control and force into their narcissistic dream.

The narcissistic dream fantasy of how others and the world should conform to their expectations is a set up for anger and conflict. Such expectations of others and the world are often impossible to be met. This often results in the narcissistic self centered person becoming very angry at others and the world for not conforming to these impossible expectations. It is this anger and rage towards others and the world which may lead the dysfunctional narcissist down the path of becoming an evil person.

The self centered person almost always blames others and the world for their failures. They then feel that others/the world have harmed them, betrayed them and deserve punishment or payback. The dysfunctional person who becomes evil then feels legitimate in lying, manipulating, abusing emotionally or physically, harming and killing others as a payback for failing or hurting them. Truly evil people have learned how to control and manipulate and hold hostage their victims through threats of violence, actual violence, intimidation, law suits, destruction of property, withholding love and sex, lying about people and destroying their reputations, disclosing secrets such as that someone is gay to their employer, blackmail emotional and material, stalking, etc.

It is at this point of frustration anger fear and despair that such a damaged, dysfunctional person may take the next step into becoming an evil person. The step into evil from dysfunction involves giving up any sense of values, morals, ethics, goodness, kindness, empathy. Such a person in their process of becoming evil is willing to lie to themselves and others distort and blame others, manipulate, harm, hurt, or kill, do whatever’s necessary to control and force the other into meeting their self centered needs. The innocent and weak are particularly susceptible to the manipulations and controls of such evil, psychic/ emotional vampires. This may include children, animals, and emotionally and physically challenged people.

Such a person has moved to the level of becoming a predator. Such a predator might prey upon others, physically, sexually, spiritually, economically. A successful evil psychic/emotional vampire has become very adept at acting as if they are a loving, kind person. They are like a Venus fly trap with sweet honey inside to attract the bee. Once inside the victim is trapped and devoured. This successful vampire also develops intuitive abilities to sense and perceive wounded, susceptible victims.

People who are raised in dysfunctional and evil families have been programmed to fulfill the needs of evil, narcissistic parents. They are trained to be naive and vulnerable to other evil persons. Sexual predators for example frequently are able to read and recognize children who are wounded and susceptible to their predation Psychologists have noted that people who have been heavily physically and emotionally abused as children usually recreate abusive friendships and relationships with abusive and evil people. This is not an accident rather evil people can readily recognize potential victims and potential victims are often attracted to them. The mythos of the Transylvanian vampire Count Dracula expresses beautifully the deep and intense relationship between the vampire and his/her symbiotic victim/host.

Scott Peck makes reference to that the victims of evil through the experience of becoming dependant and hostages of evil find it impossible to leave the abusive person or situation. Children of evil families frequently have been trained to be hostages or slaves of evil controlling people who lie to them and make many positive promises in exchange for being able to control them. In the Dracula mythos the symbiotic sexual relationship between the vampire and his host eventually leads to the death of the victim or the victim becoming a vampire and predating on other innocent people including children. The vampire mythos points to the reality that most evil people became such by staying in a relationship while being victimized by an evil person. The vampire mythos is very core in our western culture to coming to an understanding of human evil. It is a process and that process begins with being a victim. Not all victims are evil but all evil people have felt like victims or been victims. Therefore it is the hypothesis of Dr. Karr that in seeking to develop a treatment for evil one must begin early in the process before the person has truly become evil. I feel that once a person has become truly evil they have given up their humanity and are hopeless to treat. Victims of evil who are on the path towards becoming evil themselves may be helped. It is therefore important to identify people who are victims of evil or feel they are victims and begin working with them around issues of being a victim.

Psychic/emotional vampires feel very threatened if or when their victim/host have connections with other people, family, friends, even interests outside of the vampire relationship. It is characteristic of abuser/perpetrators to work consistently and diabolically to destroy their victim’s relationships with and contact with anyone or anything outside of their relationship. In the vampire mythology the victim gradually loses feeling, emotion and affect; becomes lethargic, anemic and inactive; loses energy and personality; gradually isolates from family and friends and goes through a personality change and disconnects from loved ones. They sleep all day, lose interest in food and sex and people and them become nocturnal. They also become angry and upset with others that attempt to become between them and the vampire. They may resist help such as the placing of garlic to keep the vampire out. It is Dr. Karr’s hypothesis that the victims of evil are manipulated through lies, physical and emotional abuse and hypnosis by the evil person into a vulnerable state of disassociation and disconnection from self (its becoming a Stepford wife)

This disassociated person can be like the walking dead and be manipulated to do what the psychic/ emotional vampire wants which could include such extreme actions as pulling the trigger of a shot-gun and blowing one self’s brains out. The victims of psychic vampires often have come from emotionally, physically and sexually abusive families where they learn to disassociate and be a cooperative/compliant victim. The victim is in a hypnotic, disassociated state and is often willing to believe anything the perpetrator says and be directed by the perpetrator into doing things which seem crazy, self destructive and self negative. It has been Dr. Karr’s personal experience as a victim in a long term relationship with a psychic vampire that he would be disassociated and compliant in doing what his partner wanted and then might wake up days or weeks later regretting what he had done and wondering how on earth he could have done that. In retrospect, looking back at himself that was in that relationship, he found it difficult if impossible to believe that he complied with some of the very destructive and horrible expectations which were made of him by his partner.

Looking at the vampire mythos is helpful to understand this reality. The victim/host in the Count Dracula legend is in a waking dream state, not a conscious state and in this state is under the control of Count Dracula. She has to a large extent, lost her identity and become an extension of the vampire’s dream and vision. Why does the victim host become so attached to, if not addicted to giving up oneself to the vampire’s dream/vision?

The vampire in the traditional mythos seduces the victim/host with visions and promises of immortality, intensified sensation and sexuality, lust, greed/wealth and power. Victims have been programmed in their dysfunctional or evil families to feel incomplete, un-whole, inadequate, powerless and failures; they are frequently taught by their families that without the family, i.e.: mother, father, etc., they would be nobody and nothing. They are frequently trained to believe that any sense of power or self will be gained by giving oneself up to the control of a powerful person.

Powerful, successful psychic vampires often are very good with words, allusions and lies. They construct very attractive personalities and physical facades (in our current culture with the help of plastic surgery, gym trainers, modern science, designer clothes, sports cars and Rolex watches) they become as sexy and fascinating for their victims and potential victims as did Count Dracula to his. The psychic vampire continues to hypnotize the victim with his blarney (an Irish term for the ability to poetically and beautifully exaggerate, lie and deceive with beautiful visions) The blarney includes beautiful visions and promises such as buying a house, taking a vacation, spending time together etc., which are never met and are continually moved into the future. The victim is normally blamed for the failure of the vision and made to work harder or conform more so that the promise can be met.

A characteristic of the vampire/victim relationship is that these incredible visions and expectations are never met but yet the promise of them, the victim’s desire and obsession with attaining them, motivates them to keep trying, keep working and hanging in there, no matter how horrible their reality becomes with the perpetrator. These vampire/victim relationships can become literally relationships of a living hell with physical and emotional torture and abuse and if children are created the creation of the next generation of vampires and victims ensues.

It has been Dr. Karr’s experience as a psychologist who has over twenty-five years of experience working with perpetrators, victims and children of such relationships, that there needs to be a shift in perception from an emphasis upon the perpetrator victimizing a victim to a systemic approach seeing it as a relationship between a perpetrator and a victim in which the victim is part of the system. He is especially speaking of long term, abusive relationships in which the victim chooses to stay or seems unable to leave despite knowing how destructive the relationship is and how abusive their partner is. Dr. Karr believes that a good deal more research needs to be done concerning the hypnotic process between the psychic vampire and their victim. Most people in our culture don’t understand how or why victims may stay in horribly abusive relationships and even allow their children to be horribly abused for many years without leaving. Dr. Karr believes that the vampire mythology offers some insights into understanding the full powerlessness and state of disassociation which many victims of long term abuse enter into and enables them to continue, despite being emotionally and physically abused.

The emotional/psychic vampire like Count Dracula, must in their process of taking control of their victim, gradually isolate and disconnect their victim from anyone, anything, any organization, and beliefs which would interfere with the vampire’s control, manipulation and hypnosis of their victim. It is classic that perpetrator/abusers begin their relationships with their future victim being very romantic, giving, loving, and even spoiling. This process hooks the victim personality who usually has very low self esteem is desperate for love attention and nurturing. Once the victim is hooked then there is a slow, diabolical process which involves a shift from giving, loving, nurturing, idealizing into criticism, judgment and blame. This interim phase or process is a test of how far the psychic vampire can go in taking control of their victim.

Healthier people would end such a relationship at the point of this shift. Programmed victims take the blame, work harder to be better, accept the abuse feeling that they deserve it. When the psychic vampire gets the green light at this point, they move to the next level of control; attempting to obliterate any sense of self that the victim may have. This next phase also includes attempts to disconnect the victim from family, friends, interests, even jobs and hobbies; anything that gives the person a sense of self. These phases may proceed on very different time lines depending upon the vampire and the victim. There are relationships that Dr. Karr has dealt with where the vampire/victim went through these stages very rapidly, within a few weeks or a month to three months. Other relationships, the process may have taken many years to pass through and may be catalyzed by stressful, outer life events such as: death of family, health crises, economic crises, etc.

It is the perception of Dr. Karr that for both the evil person/vampire and the victim that there are various stages and processes that a person must go through in order to become a full blown evil person/victim person. It would be useful to come up with a Lichter scale like the Kinsey scale from 1-10 to evaluate where in the process a person is. One would have to come up with the symptoms and characteristics of each of the ten levels of evil or victim.

In attempting to identify the stages and processes of the development and progress of Evil within vampire/victim relationship, we can begin looking at the vampire legend which we shall do at this point.

  • Hero/Heroine

Vlad, Count Dracula, the historical figure became the great hero and protector of Transylvania from conquests by the infidel Muslim Turks.

  • Corruption By Power

Vlad, Count Dracula experiences ego inflation and absolute power. His beloved wife is killed while he is gone and he feels betrayed by God and his people.

  • He chooses the path of evil

Out of his narcissism he has no morals, ethics or boundaries and kills and tortures thousands of people. His wife’s death for him legitimizes his committing atrocities against others, nature and God.

  • He becomes evil

Through the pleasure of killing and destroying others he becomes evil.

  • He becomes a vampire.

In having rejected all life he must drink of the blood of others in order to survive.

  • Ego inflation and the immortal self

The vampire becomes partially immortal doing everything to maintain his self and personality.

  • Finding victims to feed and maintain the perpetuation of the vampires self through time.
  • Being found out and having to move on to a new territory.
  • Developing a powerful and mesmerizing personality in order to seduce new victims.
  • Romantic and emotional seduction of the victim.
  • Hypnotizing and taking control of the victim
  • Victim welcomes the vampire in
  • Sinking teeth into the victim establishing thereby the symbiotic relationship.
  • Victims who are chosen by vampires/evil people to become vampires/evil people then have a choice to become or not to become vampires/evil.

In Bramm Stoker’s Dracula (1897) there are two important victims of Count Dracula. Lucy is characteristic of a person who succumbs to the whiles of the vampire and chooses to become one without resistance. She then feeds upon innocent children until she is destroyed with a stake through her heart by her father and fiancé.

Mina represents the victim of the vampire/evil person, who resists becoming a vampire/evil person. The vampire/evil person attempts to confuse and control the victim through hypnosis/lies. Mina is helped to resist the power of the vampire and becoming evil by Dr.Van Helsing (who symbolizes a healer, teacher, and spiritual guide/counselor, friend who recognizes the evil and helps the victim to transcend it)

The victim decides whether they wish to pursue the path of evil or not. Most victims simply die at this point and don’t become vampires. On a spiritual level many people are destroyed physically or emotionally by the vampire. It takes a good deal of strength to become fully evil and most people aren’t strong enough.

  • The Not Chosen

In the vampire myth Renfield is bitten by Count Dracula and becomes his servant. He at one point begs to become a vampire by being transformed with Count Dracula’s blood. Count Dracula refuses because he perceives Renfield as being too weak, not powerful enough to go through the transformation into a vampire. It Dr. Karr’s perception that truly evil people must be exceptional and powerful or they die or are destroyed in the process. In fact probably most evil people die and are destroyed by their own evil.

  • The Chosen

Lucy is chosen by Count Dracula to be transformed into a vampire and to become his lover.

  • The Chosen accepting the offer to become a vampire and to enter into a relationship with the other vampire.
  • The victim dies. The giving up of oneself, morality, ethics, etc.
  • The victim becomes victimizer and takes the blood and life of others.
  • Victim totally rejects their own humanity and retreats into the world of vampires and the living dead. The victim has become as evil as Count Dracula.
  • People recognize the vampire and its evil and it is exposed for what it is.
  • Tracking down the vampire and finding it when its vulnerable which is in the daylight and the truth (Self analysis, therapy and healing processes.)
  • Putting a stake through its heart and exposing it to the light.

The recognition as Jesus said: “Get thee behind me Satan” one cannot interact with evil, evil always wins. One must destroy it where it is most vulnerable which is within ones own heart. One must cut off all emotional connection with it. One must combat it with life which is symbolized by the stake, made of wood which is made of wood from the tree of life. One must open the door to the light of truth and expose evil with truth. Truth and light destroys evil.

  • Sacrifice of the beloved

Lucy is destroyed by her father and human lover out of love. They put a stake through her heart out of love so that she does not become fully evil and destroy others and create more evil. This is a symbol of the process of needing to detach from what we are most obsessed and attached to in order to not be mesmerized by evil.

The Vampire mythology clearly demonstrates the process of development from being a victim of evil toward becoming evil oneself. Throughout this process choices must be made. The difference between dysfunctional people who may abuse and hurt others as well as themselves and evil people involves consciousness and choice. A dysfunctional person who may be committing evil deeds is not doing so consciously. They are a victim who is out of control and feels guilt, shame and regret afterwards. A truly evil person is conscious and deliberate in what they are doing and are doing these evil deeds for their own sadistic pleasure, power and fulfillment of self-centered needs. They do not experience guilt, shame or regret for harming, hurting or using others. They, like the predator/vampire feel that their victim’s sole purpose is to serve and feed their needs. Victims of Evil have three options:

  • Death and destruction serving the vampire’s needs

For example: addiction, suicide, abusive relationships and extreme sacrifice of self.

  • Capitulating to evil and becoming evil oneself

Some victims model themselves after their perpetrator and become perpetrator’s themselves. They come to learn the skills of manipulating and controlling others for their own needs and to enjoy sadistic sexuality and relationships. Such persons may rise to power as CEO’s of corporations, Bishops in the church, political power or controlling parents.

  • Resisting evil which usually requires assistance.

Adult victims of Evil who have survived at some point seek emotional, physical and spiritual healing from psychotherapists, ministers, priests and rabbis, physicians and others. It is Dr. Karr’s experience that the toxic nature of victimization by Evil is so severe that a person needs a professional healer/spiritual guide to assist them. Evil is so powerful that one cannot heal from its wounds by oneself but rather requires the help and love of a healer as well as a healthy/healing community. A person can survive in a wounded stasis alone but to truly heal a healer and healing community must be found.

Traditionally in all cultures people who are the victims of Evil are taken very seriously. Healings and exorcisms are seen as potentially dangerous for both the victim and the healers. Normally healing involves the collective strength of a community of healers. The attempt to heal a victim of Evil often activates Evil. Dr. Karr has in his experience had his life threatened, threats to burn his house down, and destroy him professionally by the Evil partners of victims he was assisting. The perpetrator/partners attempted thereby to manipulate, control and stop therapy. Colleagues of Dr. Karr report similar clinical experiences in dealing with extremely abusive relationships.

Dr. M. Scott Peck, M.D., in the introduction to his book “People of the Lie, the hope for healing human evil”, emphasizes that Evil must be handled with care. He states:

This is a dangerous book. I have written it because I believe it is needed. I believe its over-all effect will be healing.

But I have also written it with trepidation. It has potential for harm. It will cause some readers pain. Worse, some may misuse its information to harm others.

Dr. Karr, like Dr. Peck, has concerns about so directly acknowledging and confronting the reality of human evil in this website. Two assistants who have helped in writing this article have been gravely affected by its content and personal relevance to them. One was unable to continue on the project. Dr. Karr takes very seriously his work with victims of Evil and is very careful to protect himself and his patients in this process.

Dr, Karr and his holistic healer colleagues at the Monarch Bear Institute are available individually and collectively as a team to work with victims of Evil. For more information see www.moarchbear.org
