Bio of Rodney G. Karr Ph.D.
Rodney G. Karr Ph.D. has been practicing as a therapist with gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, and trans-gender people since 1971. He became active in the gay rights movement in 1969 with the gay-liberation front, a movement which began nationally following the Christopher Street riots which began the Gay-Rights Movement.
When he entered graduate school at the University of Washington in Seattle, in 1970, persuing a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, he became totally out as a gay man at the University, and was president of the gay student union. He focused his political activism educating therapists and physicians concerning G.L.B.T. issues.
He helped establish the fist G.L.B.T. counseling center in the U.S. called the Seattle Counseling Service for Sexual Minorities, in 1971, and continued to work with that organization until 1975, when he left Seattle, after completing his Ph.D.
Once arriving in San Francisco/Bay Area, he became involved in local G.L.B.T. counseling and community services. He was involved for five years supervising trainees and facilitating groups at Pacific Center for Human Growth in Berkeley, and for over eight years with Operation Concern, Pacific Medical Center (now called New Leaf), supervising interns and facilitating groups.
He also was involved as an associate staff member in the Department of Psychiatry, Langley Porter, (the Human Sexuality Program) at UC Medical School, San Francisco. He taught physicians, nurses, therapists, and other health-professionals about the issues and concerns of G.L.B.T. peoples.
He has been a liscenced psychologist for over 22 years, and since 1982 has had a private practice focused primarily upon serving the G.L.B.T. community. He has since the begining of the AIDS epidemic in San Francisco, been involved in education, politics, and service to the HIV and AIDS communities. He was involved in 1982 through 1985 in organizing and helping to design various workshops concerning HIV and AIDS, with Operation Concern, the Shanti Project, and the AIDS Foundation.
Rodney Karr for 22 years was in Jungian analysis, and went through an extensive process of training and self-exploration and healing with a Jungian analyst from the Jung Institute in San Francisco. He utilizes this extensive training in Jungian therapy in his own practice.
Rodney Karr has been involved as a dedicated spiritual seeker since childhood. He has over the years studied intensively with Hindu, Buddhist, Druid, and Western Mysteries teachers. He is an initiated practitioner in two ancient traditions; Druid & Underworld-Western Mysteries Tradition. He is a liscenced minister in the Western Mysteries tradition. He facilitates Jungian Shamanic groups which teach and practice Jungian and Shamanistic principles.
